I was rereading Maurice Nicoll's "The New Man" [Penguin Books:New York,1976] and came across this quotation.
"The devil represents all in a man that cannot evolve and all that does not wish to and hates every idea of inner evolution, all that wishes only to slander and misunderstand and have its own way."
I think of evil as that which is destructive, opposes creativity, tears down without building up. The devil, then, is a particular expression of evil at any given moment. While it originates within us, it can find an outer expression in actions such as covetousness, cruelty, brutality, ruthlessness, rape, murder, oppression, war, etc.
What is your understanding of evil and the devil?
